At 8:30 PM on Saturday 26th March 2011, lights will switch off around the globe for Earth Hour. Earth Hour has done a lot to raise awareness of sustainability issues.

Last year 128 countries and territories joined the global display of climate action. Iconic buildings and landmarks from Asia Pacific to Europe and Africa to the Americas switched off. People across the world from all walks of life turned off their lights and came together in celebration and contemplation of the one thing we all have in common – our planet.

This Earth Hour we want you to go beyond the hour, so after the lights go back on think about what else you can do to make a difference. Together our actions add up.

Read the Letter

Last month, a coalition of 50 organizations (environmental, consumer advocate, faith-based and other) published a set of principles for global warming legislation called the National Call to Action on Global Warming. These principles outline a plan that reduces our global warming pollution, protects consumers and renews our economy. The National Call is now being circulated around the country as a letter targeted towards Congress and the Obama Administration to urge them to pass strong climate legislation that the U.S. can present at this December’s UN Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen.

The goal is to present the letter to members of Congress with a broad showing of support from local groups and businesses. Down here in Southern Maryland, Representative Hoyer has told us that he will only support strong climate legislation if he sees support “from a broad range of his constituency.”

Will your group or business sign on in support of this National Call to Action? Please email meredith.epstein@gmail.com no later than May 4th. In your response, please include the city where your office is located to be sure that Representative Hoyer sees how broad and diverse the call for action on climate change is coming from his constituency.
