The annual Patuxent River Cleanup is scheduled for Saturday April 5. Myrtle Point is one of a number of sites on the Patuxent and the Friends of Myrtle Point Park plan on beginning their work at 9:00 a.m. and running until noon. In past years we have been joined by scout troops, the Patuxent Roughnecks (a volunteer group working on special river projects), board members, regular members, and people from the community. For those planning to join us, please come to the picnic area where we will have a sign in sheet. Here you will get your assignment, trash bags, buckets, and work gloves. It is advisable to wear sturdy work clothes and shoes. Please check back in to the picnic area and let us know what you found, how much trash you picked up, and if we need to give any area additional attention. The fishing area at the point is in particular need of attention. As in the past we have the cooperation of the county through their board of Recreation and Parks. This group has a lot on its plate and they need the help of volunteers to be able and perform all the tasks assigned to them. With no personnel specifically assigned to the park, they are heavily dependent on volunteers for work here. As a user of the park, this is your chance to give back. As a participant in these efforts I can tell you this is a fun and rewarding way to spend an hour or the whole morning. If you have a group interested in joining us, please contact us in advance at 410-394-1300 or by e-mail at bobboxwell@hotmail.com. | ||

There are hundreds of stormwater control structures in St. Mary's County that were built to protect creeks and streams from the runoff from housing developments. The Potomac River Association commissioned a study of some of these structures earlier this year. Almost all of them were neglected and failing to do what they were built to do. The PRA is sponsoring a one day, three hour workshop to teach citizens how to evaluate the performance of stormwater control structures. We will use their reports to work with the county to restore these structures to their intended function. The workshop will be held April 26 and is free. There is no more important aspect to environmental protection in Southern Maryland than controlling runoff from land to water. Nearly one quarter of St. Mary's County lies in the St. Mary's River watershed. The river receives drainage from over 100 miles of streams and flows into the Potomac River at St. George's Island. Our trip will start in Great Mills at the County canoe launch and we will paddle for about 5 miles downstream to St. Mary's College of Maryland at Historic St. Mary's City where we will have a picnic lunch (provided). Joining us will be Bob Lewis, the Executive Director of the St. Mary's River Watershed Association to provide information about the river and preservation efforts there. Start: 08:00
