The Patuxent Roughnecks volunteer work crew invites you to their next work trip:

Where:
Meeting location to be determined based on weather and water levels
The goal of the Roughnecks is to maintain fish passage and a free flowing river for humans. The Crew works in fringe areas to remove blockages that harm the ecology of the river. During this work trip, the Roughnecks will hike or paddle (dependant on the weather) within the Patuxent River watershed and remove blockages impeding the channel. Patuxent Riverkeeper will provide maps, GPS, tools, and drinking water as well as paddling gear and boats if needed. Please be prepared to hike or paddle and bring any additional gear as you see fit...

The Annual Lower Potomac Tributary Wade In is Sunday, June 22nd from 1 to 5 pm along the shoreline at Mirant's Morgantown Generating Plant.
A wade-in focuses on the health of the Potomac River. Each year, an official depth measurement is recorded at which participants can no longer see their sneakers by looking through the water.
Seemingly unscientific, the measurement is valuable over time. As annual depths increase, sediments and other harmful particles that impact water clarity decrease. Reductions in depth measurements mean there are more sediments.

BLACK DIAMONDS charts the escalating drama in Appalachia over the alarming increase in large mountaintop coal mines. These mammoth operations have covered 1200 miles of headwater streams with mining waste; demolished thousands of acres of hardwood forest; and flattened hundreds of Appalachian mountain peaks.
